In this project, my colleague, Kate Marr-Laing (McGill University) and I examine C-section rates and birth rates among women in Canada using CIHI data for 2018–2023. Results show that despite a decline in hospital utilization rates and birth rates during the pandemic, there was a notable increase in C-section deliveries in 2020. One explanation is that hospitals were functioning under a logic of efficiency where planned C-sections may have been used to control the flow of patients and bed utilization. Our study shows the need for a keener eye by policymakers in areas of women’s reproductive health during times of public health crisis.
